Sierra College Football Coach Begins Leave of Absence
Posted: 9/29/2011

Jeff Tisdel
ROCKLIN – Sierra College head football coach, Jeff Tisdel announced this morning he is taking a medical leave of absence and immediately stepping down from his coaching duties. Tisdel will continue to teach his physical education classes at Sierra.
Tisdel, whose 79-32 record at Sierra ranks as one of the nation’s best winning percentages, has lost 32 pounds in the past three months.
“I have a health concern I have to take care of immediately,” he said. “Football is my passion, but I’ve got to get better.”
With an overall coaching record of 176-76, Tisdel has been a local coaching fixture for three decades. Prior to Sierra, he led programs at Christian Brothers High School, Sacramento City College, and the University of Nevada.
Wolverine defensive coordinator Ed Eaton will be the interim head coach, just as he was in 2006 when Tisdel took a sabbatical. Sierra Associate Dean of Athletics Tom Gang, who was the head coach at Mendocino College as recently as last year, said he will return to the sideline as an offensive advisor.
“Tis needs to take care of himself and we’ll support whatever he has to do,” Gang said. “I asked Ed what I could do to help and he said I could help with the offense.
”The Wolverines (0-3) look for their first win this Saturday as they host arch-rival American River College (3-0) in a 1:00pm game at Homer “Buzz” Ostrom Stadium in Rocklin.
Youngest NASCAR Driver Ever Teams with Mercury Insurance to Promote Don't Text & Drive Pledge
Posted: 9/20/2011
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – When a 14-year-old professional NASCAR racer talks to teenagers about the perils of distracted driving, they listen. That’s why Mercury Insurance has partnered with Andrew Murray – the youngest sanctioned NASCAR driver* – to promote Mercury’s “Don’t Text and Drive Pledge” campaign.
“Distracted driving, especially among teens, is reaching epidemic proportions,” said Erik Thompson, advertising director for Mercury Insurance. “Andrew is helping us connect with teenagers about the dangers of distracted driving – especially texting – and encouraging them to sign our Don’t Text and Drive Pledge at http://mercuryinsuranceopen.com/pledge.aspx.”
Mercury will be sponsoring Murray in his NASCAR K&N Pro Series West debut at All American Speedway in Roseville, California (near Sacramento) on Oct. 15. He will be driving the Mercury Insurance #32 Team Heritage Motor Sports Chevy.
Murray, who hails from Temecula, California, will be 15 years and 12 days old on race day, making him the youngest driver in the series’ 57-year history.
“My two goals right now are to work my way up the ladder to become a NASCAR Sprint Cup racer, and to continue to educate teens about the consequences of texting while driving,” said Murray.
Murray, who began his racing career at age five, has already been speaking to high school students on behalf of Mercury’s Don’t Text and Drive Pledge. “Safe driving is a major concern of mine and Mercury’s,” said Murray. “A lot of my peers need to fully understand how deadly it can be when they don’t concentrate while driving.”
Thompson said Mercury’s Don’t Text and Drive Pledge, which launched at the recent Mercury Insurance Open tennis event in Carlsbad, Calif., will use social media avenues, such as Facebook and Twitter to help promote Murray and spread the word about the dangers of texting and driving.
In early 2011, at 14 years, eight months, Andrew became the youngest NASCAR-sanctioned driver by competing in the NASCAR Late Model Division.
Andrew Murray began his racing career at five, driving go-karts and winning races when many of his peers had to be buckled into child seats to even ride in a car. Andrew has set “youngest driver” records at every level he has competed while consistently out-driving much older competition. In early 2011, at 14 years, eight months, Andrew became the youngest NASCAR-sanctioned driver by competing in the NASCAR Late Model Division. The next step up the NASCAR ladder: Driving in the K&N Pro Series West 12 days after his 15th birthday.
- 2006 – (Age 9) Youngest driver to win a Stars of Karting event.
- 2009 – (12) Youngest driver to win a USAC Junior race. (Won four times during the year.)
- 2010 – (13) Youngest Full Focus USAC driver. (He finished second three times.)
- 2011 – (14 yrs., 8 mos.) Youngest 360 Sprint driver and youngest NASCAR Late Model Division driver. (Finished third and fifth in seven races.)
- 2011 – On October 15, becomes the youngest driver in the 57-year history of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West at 15 years, 12 days old.
- The Future – After competing in the Pro Series West for a few years, Andrew hopes to become one of NASCAR’s youngest drivers in the Nationwide Series.

Playoff Tickets on Sale as River Cats Battle for Division Title
Posted: 8/23/2011
Sacramento Region – Playoff tickets are now on sale for the Sacramento River Cats, who currently hold a 9.0-game lead over the Las Vegas 51s in the Pacific Coast League South Division. With 22 games remaining in the regular season, fans should secure their Pacific Coast League playoff tickets early. Tickets are now on sale at the Raley Field Ticket Office, www.rivercats.com/playoffs and www.ticketmaster.com. Individual game tickets are available as well as full six-game playoff strips, which provide the best value.
The River Cats “magic number” to clinch their 10th division title in 12 years is 14 (“magic number” refers to the number of River Cats victories needed to clinch the outright division title). The River Cats have won a remarkable four PCL Championships (2003, 2004, 2007 and 2008) and two Triple-A Championships (2007 and 2008) in the franchise’s first 11 seasons.
Should the River Cats qualify for postseason play, the team will host games 3, 4 and 5 (Sept. 9, 10 and 11) of the five-game Pacific Conference Championship Series at Raley Field (Games 4 and 5 if necessary). Games 1 and 2 would be played on the road.
If the season ended today, the River Cats’ first-round opponent would be the rival Reno Aces (Triple-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks), who own a 5.5-game lead in the North Division.
If the River Cats advance to the PCL Championship Series (also a best-of-five format) they would again host games 3, 4 and 5 (Sept. 16, 17 and 18) at Raley Field (Games 4 and 5 if necessary). Games 1 and 2 would be played on the road. If the River Cats were to win this series and be crowned Pacific Coast League Champions, they would then play the International League Champion in the Triple-A Baseball National Championship Game in Albuquerque, NM, on Tuesday, September 20.
Fans Take the Track This Saturday at All American Speedway

All American Speedway’s highly anticipated Fan Appreciation Night takes place this Saturday, August 20th. The gates to the asphalt oval will be opened as fans take the track to mingle with the drivers, get autographs, and see race cars up close. All the cars and drivers from all divisions bring their cars on track for the annual meet and greet.
Other plans include two bounce houses, kids cub karts, lots of free giveaways such as tickets for the Speedway and other events, t-shirts, caps, food coupons and more.
When the pros take over the track it will be for the NASCAR Whelen All American Series championship points race featuring NASCAR Late Models 100, Modifieds 40, Street Stocks and Bombers 35 laps. As the weather continues to stay hot with Saturday expecting temperatures in the low 90’s the points chase will also continue to get heated providing lots of racing action.
In the Street Stock division, Mickey Owens continues to hold his points lead over the field, but finished second last weekend handing the win to Richard Poppert Jr. who is currently second in points. In third, Byron Gonzales is still working his magic on narrowing the gap for second.
After a week off, NASCAR Late Models return. Matt Scott continues to lead the field with a 23 point advantage over Jason Romero sitting in second. Romero continues his winning streak as he tries to close the gap for first. Rookie driver Dylan Hutchison continues to show progression in his first year of stock car racing and has moved into the fourth position narrowing the gap for third with Juan Pitta.
Dan Jinkerson has gained in his first place points lead as he captured his second Modified win this season. Currently in second, Steve Cote is working hard to get Jinkerson shaking in his boots for the 2011 championship. With three races and one twin 50s left for the 2011 season the battle for the top spot will only continue to get heated.
Seven time Bomber feature winner, Chris Paulson has finalized his 2011 Championship since the two drivers in second and third in points, Erick Ray and Matt Camp, have been placed on probation, losing all competition points, which gives Richard Perez the second spot. The gap between Perez and Paulson is so far that Paulson has set in stone the 2011 championship.
Pit Gates and Registration opens at noon with practice starting at 2 pm. The Grandstands open at 4pm
with qualifying set for 4pm and green flag racing at 6pm. Ticket prices for the evening will be as follows:
Adults (16-59) $13

New Community Basketball Leagues Looks to Capture Attention of Players and Fans After NBA Announces Lockout
Posted: 8/13/2011
In a world of salary caps, revenue sharing, and ever-growing player paychecks, NBA owners and players failed to agree on a new contract, leading to the expiration of the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement on July 1. The disappointing result is a lockout with no end in sight. In fact, some experts say the entire 2011-12 NBA season might be in jeopardy.
The official word from the NBA: During the lockout, players will not receive their salaries; teams will not negotiate, sign or trade player contracts; players will not be able to use team facilities for any purpose; and teams will not conduct or facilitate any summer camps, exhibitions, practices, workouts, coaching sessions or team meetings.
“We have made several proposals to the union, including a deal targeting $2 billion annually as the players’ share — an average of approximately $5 million per player that could increase along with league revenue growth,” said NBA Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver in an NBA press release. “We will continue to make every effort to reach a new agreement that is fair and in the best interests of our teams, our players, our fans, and our game.”
While the NBA lockout affects basketball fans and players across the U.S., there is a company that will soon be providing basketball fans and amateur players with an alternative. An innovative basketball league, called the CBL, now offers excitement and opportunity for basketball lovers nationwide. The Community Basketball Leagues (CBL) is the fastest-growing, amateur-based basketball network in the U.S. and they are currently raising $2.5 million for their expansion into 600 cities across America. The buzz surrounding the CBL centers on its Exposure League (also known as the E-League).
“The CBL is creating the most unmatched and comprehensive preparatory basketball league experience in America,” said Jamar Johnson, chief commissioner of the CBL. “Our E-League is amateur-based so NBA players could not play in our league, but we would love for NBA players to join us as general managers and mentors of E-League Teams in local communities across the country.”
The dynamic CBL E-League will offer professionally organized and managed teams, as well as guaranteed playing time and player development opportunities for all players. CBL players and teams have access to the organization’s global basketball network of college coaches, professional and minor league basketball teams and scouts, and every basketball agent in the United States representing grad-level players within the US and overseas. General managers and coaches even receive an incentive bonus if they place a player on a college, minor or professional basketball league team.
“The CBL is the most important sports league to ever come to our area!” said CBL player Brandon A. “The league is constructed to create a pro-like environment for what are mostly amateur players. The CBL did an excellent job of making rules designed to create an exciting, fast-paced, action-packed game, where all of the players get equal playing time.”
And according to CBL participant Cecil M., “The CBL provided not only a chance for players to have a safe and fun environment to play in, but it also provided an outlet for families to come and enjoy basketball at all levels.”
With a 30-game E-League scheduled slotted to begin in May 2012, players and fans throughout the U.S. can depend on the CBL for exciting, family-oriented, community basketball. The 2012 CBL schedule includes E-League teams from cities in Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Carolina, and Texas. To learn more about the CBL youth and adult leagues and its nationwide, preparatory E-League basketball program, visit the CBL at www.cblhoopsusa.com.

On June 6, I presented a Resolution on the Senate floor to off-roading legend Mark A. Smith of Georgetown, to recognize his tremendous contributions in building a major hobby enjoyed by thousands of Californians and building our state’s economy.
Mark Smith is the father of the world-famous Rubicon Trail off-road trek in El Dorado and Placer counties that literally created a new sport. Now people from across the country come to California to put themselves to the ultimate off-road test.
Smith went on to lead the first team of drivers from the tip of South America to the Arctic Circle and led a team of US off-road drivers in the 1987 Camel Trophy, the world’s number-one off-road competition, as well as being named “four wheeler of the decade” by United Four Wheel Drive magazine.
Now, Mark A. Smith Off-Roading, Inc. is an industry leader for off-road adventures, providing the equipment and expertise for groups and individuals who want to get off the beaten path and navigate the types of rough terrain first tamed by Mr. Smith himself.
Mark Smith is a pioneer who shows true California spirit. He built a sport, built a business and built an unmatched reputation in his field.
It was my pleasure to honor him.

Big Dirt Coming to All American Speedway
Posted: 6/19/2011
Roseville, CA. Truckloads of dirt will be hauled in to the All American Speedway following the Dad’s Day Race on Saturday night, June 18. But never fear, the asphalt oval is not reverting to its roots of dirt track racing. A variety of mountains and mud pits are being created on the in-field for the Speedway events to be held during the annual Placer County Fair, June 23-26.
Friday night’s show will feature the Boost Mobile Freestyle Motocross pros competing as they fly off a 50-foot tall ramp on motocross bikes, risking life and limb to perform 360 degree back flips in mid-air. If you’re a fan of Metal Mulisha or the X-Games, you’ll recognize these pros. As of press time, some of the riders expected to attend are Matt Buyten- 6 time X-Games Gold; Kenny Bell-AMA Arenacross Pro and Dew Action Sports Tour; John Distler- Dew Tour, LG Actions Sports Tour; Jim McNeil-Dew and LG Tours, X-Games, Nuclear Cowboyz; Mike Metzger- The Godfather of FMX- EVERYTHING; and Brody Wilson- International FMX Assn Rookie of the Year 2009, X-Games. The show starts at 7:30 pm.
The Monster Truck Show at the Placer County Fair last year was a monster hit, so the big boys are returning this year with two shows of spectacular power and force. “Time Fly’s”, “Fired Up” and “Hog Wild” will be competing in the fan favorite freestyle format, overcoming every obstacle and mountain on the track, flying through the air, standing like a giant transformer on rear wheels, bouncing like a low-rider, and roaring around the arena. The Monster Truck shows also include some freestyle motocross exhibitions and 4x4 truck pulls, including a Local Street Class. Two shows start at 3:00 pm and 7:30 pm.
The Hot Rod Truck and Tractor Pulls on Sunday night in the All American Speedway grandstands will feature two-, three-, and four-engine tractors to make the ground tremble as they compete to pull the heaviest load. The engines pulse and pound as they idle, and when they are hooked up to the weighted sled, they roar with all their mighty horsepower. The sound drowns out the cheers from the crowds as the drivers coax the most they can out of their truck, while the weight of the sled they
are pulling gets heavier and heavier, until finally the truck is kept at a standstill. From draft horses behind plows to suped up farm tractors, the competition of pulling the heaviest load is directly linked to agriculture. A few of the top machines expected to compete for the $12,000 purse will be Maxx Kakl, Git ‘R Done, Wild Thing, Deuces Wild, Cal Poly’s Mustang Fever, Mini Mouse and Sharecropper. The show starts at 6:00 pm.
Tickets for the Speedway events during the Placer County Fair can be purchased in advance and cost $12 for adults and $7 for kids 6-12. Fair admission is FREE before 3:00 pm, or just $4 for adults and $2 for kids after 3:00 pm. The first 150 tickets sold for each event will include admission to the California State Fair. For tickets and information visit www.PlacerCountyFair.org or purchase at the Fair office, 800 All America City Blvd, Roseville.
All American Speedway NASCAR racing resumes with the Red, White, and Blue Race on July 2, featuring Late Models, Modified and Bomber divisions. For Speedway information visit www.AllAmericanSpeedway.com.
A Tribute to Seve Ballesteros
By Terry Fisher Posted: 6/7/2011
The recent, sad passing of golfing icon Seve Ballesteros has been almost universally announced as the end of era – For this “Brit,” I see it as the beginning of an era.
The beginning of a European dominance in golf has been brought to life by seeds sewn back in the late 1970s, and 1980s. Currently six of the top 10 players in the official World Golf Rankings are Europeans: Lee Westwood (England), Luke Donald (Eng.), Martin Kaymer (Germany), Graeme McDowell (Northern Ireland), Rory McIlroy (NIR), and Paul Casey (Eng.). Much of the credit for the emergence of Europe as a force can be laid squarely at the feet of Seve, widely seen as the best European golfer of all time.
At a time when the Great Britain and Ireland Ryder Cup team were getting shellackings by the bellyful, Seve emerged with the newly constituted European team as leader of Spain’s “golfing armada,” with partner Jose Maria Olazabal.
The heartbeat of the European team, he shone with the team’s successes on the U.K. home course The Belfrey in l985 and l989. He continued in the winning teams on U.S. soil in 1987 at Muirfield Village, Ohio and in l995 at Rochester, New York.
His brilliance provided so much more that just the points he achieved. He gave the Europeans that included U.K.’s Nick Faldo, Scotland’s Sandy Lyle, Welshman Ian Woosnam and German Bernard Langer, total belief. They were not only equal to the Americans they could actually beat them!
Yes, it was Seve who first travelled to the U.S. and won multiple tournaments on the PGA tour. He became the first European to break the USA dominance in the Open and became the first European to win the Masters at Augusta.
Even before Tiger Woods emerged as a great shot maker, he was predated by Seve who made birdies from “impossible” locations where only bogeys seemed the only outcome.
Robert Green, editor-in-chief of Golf International and author of Seve: Golf’s Flawed Genius, exclaimed in his book that Seve had an “extraordinary imagination,” adding: “delicacy of touch and range of shots around the green that he possessed were legendary, a consequence of learning the fundamentals of the game with just one club, and that a three iron.”
I believe his inspirational qualities and never-say-die spirit live on in the hearts of the Europeans. They are an amazingly close knit group of golfers, some of whom often travel together to ever-increasing exotic courses on the European PGA Tour.
I can’t see the American top guns taking a back seat for too long. There are too many great and talented young golfing stars waiting to have their day in the sun. When will this happen? Perhaps, we should look in the tea leaves!
Terry Fisher is the head golf professional and Director of Golf at Black Oak Golf Course, Auburn; former PGA, National Federation of High Schools certified coach; First Tee of Sacramento assistant coach, and member of the Chartered Institute of Journalists (est. 1884).

Rocket's Swim Team Soars to 10th Straight League Title
The Rollingwood Rockets, a Fair Oaks based swim team finished atop the Sacramento Swim League, and celebrated a decade of championship swimming. The two-day Championship Meet was held at Sierra College on July 19th and 20th, and was attended by over 800 swimmers from 8 different swim teams. Rocket swimmers Posted: 1721 points, outscoring their nearest competitors, the Sacramento Stingrays, by almost 500 points!
Interesting enough, the Rockets had only 1 individual high point winner, 14-year-old Alex Peterson. A “high point” trophy is presented to the boy and girl swimmer in each age group that scores the most points in the Championship meet. Other teams such as the Stingrays, the Del Norte Dolphins, and the Arden Manor Piranhas each had 3 swimmers earning the prestigious award. “It just goes to show, you can’t win a championship meet with superstars alone” commented Head Coach Kim Berrios. “Our 163-member team is the 3rd largest in the league, but we have by far the most depth, with strong swimmers in every age group. Some teams cater to their ‘big fish’, but we try to focus on all our swimmers, especially the ones that are struggling. Our goal is to have every Rocket swimming beautifully, and we reach this goal by emphasizing technique, and giving continued feedback to each swimmer throughout the season.”
Swimmers from the eight teams competed in “preliminary heats” in the morning, and then the top 10 finishers swam again in the afternoon “finals”. As a testament to the team’s depth, the Rockets had finalists in 84 of the 86 events. In the 13-14 girls’ 50 yard freestyle finals, Rocket swimmers occupied six of the ten lanes, and finished 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 8th. Five different 13-14 girls then went on to final in the 100 yard freestyle event. The 15-18 girls also racked-up mega-points having 5 of the 10 swimmers in the 50 free final, and 6 swimmers in the 50 yard butterfly. Not to be outdone by the girls, the 11-12 boys finished 1st through 4th in their 50 freestyle event.
Ten league records were set during the Championship meet, two by Rollingwood Rocket Alex Peterson. He broke the 13-14 boys 50 yard freestyle (23.21 seconds) which had been held by the previous record holder for 32 years! He also broke the 50 butterfly record (25.95), and earlier in the season he broke the 100 yard freestyle record (52.20). The 13-14 girls freestyle relay team of Ashlee Ellsworth, Jenny Miller, Charlotte Bailey, and Summer Elliot smashed the team record in a time of 1:48.99, and just missed the league record by less than two tenths of a second. 12-year-old Jordan Zawaydeh finished first in the 50 yard butterfly, breaking the team record in a scorching time of 28.70 seconds. Other Rocket swimmers finishing first in an individual event were first-year swimmer Garrett McDanniel (7/8B 25 free, 16.16), Brianne Welch (7/8G 25 free, 16.47), Sam Krug (9/10B 50 free, 30.74), Amy Ellsworth (11/12G 100 free, 1:04.60), Emily Nugent (15-18G 100 free, 59.20), and Cindy LoPresti (15-18G 100 breaststroke, 1:12.53). Although the number of first places in the individual events may seem low for the League Champions, The Rockets won 9 of the 21 relays. “The big points are scored in the relays”, commented Coach Kim, “and when you have “A” and “B” relays composed of 8 very fast swimmers, you can dominate a championship meet”.
What makes the Rockets different from other high-powered teams in the area? If you were to visit Rollingwood Racquet Club you would see. Nestled in the corner of Main Ave. and Winding Oak Dr., the club is not even visible from the roadway. Some of the club members lived in the neighborhood for years, and didn’t know the club existed. The club just underwent a huge renovation to the fitness areas, the surroundings are beautiful, but the champions swim in a small 4-lane pool. Club membership is a requirement, but most of the families do not mind. They know they are getting expert coaching, and the opportunity to participate in a high quality program. There is no fancy aquatic center or any other frills, but according to Coach Kim, “the kids are so motivated and they have so much pride in themselves and in their team. We do not emphasize ‘winning’. We try to instill excellent work ethic, and we focus on personal bests and continual improvement. The winning just seems to be a natural outcome of dedicated swimmers, dedicated coaches, and super-supportive parents. The kids are all team players, and that’s what it takes to be the 10-time Sacramento Swim League Champions!”
Rollingwood Racquet Club offers a Fall Swim Clinic, winter lessons in their indoor pool, a Spring Swim Club, and a summer Water Polo Clinic, all of which are open to non-members. Please call Coach Kim if you would like some information on these programs (988-1727, ex. 106). You could also visit the club’s website at http://rollingwoodclub.com/ to download information/registration forms, or email Kim at kberrios@rollingwoodclub.com.

Volkssports (sport of the people) began in Germany in the 1970’s and US military families couldn’t wait to bring the sport to the US. There are over 300 clubs in the US and Sacramento boasts the largest club in California—the Sacramento Walking Sticks. These walks are all non-competitive and people find out quickly that when they’re walking with a group; they walk further and faster because they’re engaged in conversation while looking at sights they’ve never seen before.
The Sacramento Walking Sticks have a monthly meeting that everyone is welcome to attend. They are held on the 2nd Thursday of every month, 7:00 p.m., at the SMUD Customer Service Center, Timberline III meeting room, 6301 St, Sacramento 95819. Our next meeting will be on June 12th. For those people who like to walk, they can meet at 5:00 p.m. at the front of the SMUD Customer Service Center Building for a 3-mile walk in the surrounding neighborhood. Dinner will follow.

Cal Expo has submitted its license application with the knowledge of SHA’s failure to comply and at the request of the Richard Shapiro, Chairman of the CHRB.
If SHA’s license is revoked as planned and the CHRB approves Cal Expo’s application to operate the harness meet, Cal Expo will oversee the entire live harness racing program including staffing, maintenance, and operations, effective March 2, 2008. The first live harness racing meet under the new Cal Expo license would be Thursday, March 6. Cal Expo’s tentative race schedule is Thursday through Saturday each week until August 2, 2008.
After the summer harness racing meet, the California State Fair will host a live thoroughbred, quarter horse and mixed breed race meet at Cal Expo from August 20 – September 1.
