Sentinel Man's Last Stand
Some say newspapers are a reflection of the community they serve. Hopefully the Placer Sentinel has managed to achieve that reflection, at
least by some small measure, in the 19 years that we've been here.
Telling the stories of the people and events that have touched our
community has been the rewarding and enjoyable part of publishing. The far-less joyful aspect has been watching the nation’s economy, and in turn our local businesses, struggle and in some cases fail in this depression-like downturn.
The Sentinel
has suffered along with many others as the “A couldn’t pay B so B
didn’t pay C so no one paid me” syndrome occurred. This was not true
for all our regular advertisers, for which we are thankful, but it was
certainly true for a large enough number of advertisers to set the Sentinel back onto its heels this year.
After
looking at our end-of-the-year financials and the probability of the
economy hopping back soon, we have reluctantly decided to cease
publishing the Placer Sentinel for the time being. In fact, one staff member is going on a much-postponed vacation to Hawaii and the rest of us think we may join him.
We
sincerely thank our many, many readers (both hard copy and electronic);
our Sentinel Man Contest devotees; our talented columnists and writers,
many of whom are utterly unforgettable; our remarkable staff members,
both present and past; and mostly our wonderful advertisers who have
made it possible for us to publish the Sentinel.
Publishing
a small newspaper has been enjoyable in the past and we’re sure it will
eventually be so again. We hope to be around when it is.
Warmest regards,
