The Placer County Board of Supervisors today approved the award of the final contract for the Kings Beach Commercial Core Improvement Project.
The $5,714,716 contract, awarded to Disney Construction Inc., will complete the second and final phase of the project.
Set to begin this spring, phase 2 includes extending sidewalks and water quality improvements on both ends of state Route 28 in Kings Beach. Phase 1 is expected to be completed by July of this year and Phase 2 is expected to be completed by November of this year.
The project overall is transforming a 1.1-mile stretch of State Route 28 that runs through scenic North Lake Tahoe with roadway, sidewalk, lighting, landscaping and water quality improvements designed to create a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly commercial center in the heart of Kings Beach.
The first phase of the project, (approximately 95 percent complete), modifies State Route 28 from a four-lane highway with limited parking and pedestrian facilities to a three-lane road with sidewalks, bike lanes, parking, transit turnouts and extensive storm drainage treatment improvements.
“I am delighted to see the light at the end of the tunnel for this project,” said District 5 Supervisor Jennifer Montgomery. “These improvements will provide residents and visitors a safer place to walk and ride a bike, easier access to our downtown area businesses, improve traffic flow, not to mention help preserve Lake Tahoe’s clarity.”
The Kings Beach Commercial Core Improvement Project was recently honored with the 2016 Outstanding Local Streets and Road Project Award by the County Engineers Association of California and the Public Works Officers’ Institute.
