Legislators Support Request for Presidential Major Disaster Declaration

SACRAMENTO, CA (MPG) – Assemblymember Frank Bigelow along with several state legislators have sent a letter to President Trump supporting the Governor’s request for a Presidential Major Disaster Declaration for the wildfires in California that started in September.

“California is facing its most destructive wildfire season in our state’s history,” says Assemblymember Bigelow. “The Creek Fire in my district has already burned over 300,000 acres alone and continues to grow. Our state needs the federal support to combat these fires.”

In the month of September, Governor Newsom has declared the counties of Fresno, Los Angeles, Madera, Mendocino, San Bernardino, San Diego and Siskiyou to be under a State of Emergency. 13 wildfires that were started in September have destroyed over 1,887,932 acres, injuring 13 people and taking the life of three.

The Governor’s request for a Presidential Major Disaster Declaration comes from California’s 27 major fires. These wildfires have burned over 3.7 million acres causing 26 fatalities. The wildfires have destroyed or damaged 7,630 structures. Assemblymember Bigelow along with several state legislatures support the request is to assist the counties of Fresno, Los Angeles, Madera, Mendocino, San Bernardino, San Diego and Siskiyou in state and local wildfire response and recovery.
