Placerville Man Convicted of Arson for Mosquito and Crozier Fires in August 2024
Mar 17, 2025 03:49PM ● By CAL FIRE News ReleaseEL DORADO COUNTY, CA (MPG) – On the week of Jan. 25, Jason Robinette, 48, of Placerville was convicted in El Dorado County Superior Court on two counts of arson for starting the Mosquito and Crozier fires on August 6, 2024.
The conviction was the result of an extensive and thorough investigation, and the collaborative efforts of CAL FIRE Law Enforcement, the U.S. Forest Service’s Law Enforcement and Investigations Office, the El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office, and the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office to hold arsonists accountable and protect our communities.
The Mosquito Fire started in the early evening hours of August 6 in the same general area as the Crozier Fire but was quickly contained. While they share the same name, this is a different incident than the 2022 Mosquito Fire. A few hours later, the Crozier Fire ignited, ultimately burning 1,960 acres in El Dorado County. Investigators determined both fires were intentionally set on August 6, leading to Robinette’s arrest and subsequent conviction.
Due to the commitment and aggressive prosecution by the El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office, Robinette was convicted of two felony arson charges, marking a significant victory in the fight against wildfire-related crimes and reinforcing the serious consequences of arson. His sentencing is scheduled to take place in approximately one month.
CAL FIRE Law Enforcement Officers work diligently to investigate all fires and apprehend those suspected of starting fire. In 2024, they made 151 arson arrests. The public is encouraged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the secure arson hotline at 1-800-468-4408.
