PLACER COUNTY, CA (MPG) - As communities nationwide commemorate the United States' 250th anniversary with parades, historical reenactments and civic events, one national effort is having a direct local impact in Placer County.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has delivered a 40,000-pound shipment of food to Northern California, including Feeding the Foothills, as part of a broader initiative to support 250 food banks across all 50 states in honor of the Declaration of Independence's 250th anniversary.
"It is about inspiring a spirit of service that defines who we are as Americans," said Rosie Rios, national chair of America250.
This effort is part of a collaboration with America250, a nationwide initiative encouraging reflection on the nation's past, present and future while promoting civic engagement and unity. Locally, the volunteer effort is strengthened through a partnership with the Placer County-based Latino Leadership Council and Feeding the Foothills, formerly known as the Placer Food Bank.

Based in Roseville, Feeding the Foothills serves El Dorado, Nevada and Placer Counties through a network of more than 60 hunger-relief programs that provide food and services to tens of thousands of residents each month. The Latino Leadership Council works with community and government agencies to serve the health, education, and self-reliance needs of Latino families throughout Placer County.
Robin Cook, an area leader for the LDS Church, said, "As we celebrate America 250, our church members are excited to partner with other community groups and organizations like Feeding the Foothills and Latino Leadership. America 250 is an opportunity for all to come together, serve together, and express gratitude for the freedoms that have allowed all faiths — including ours — to flourish.”
