TAHOE CITY, CA (MPG) - Members of the community are invited to join a once-in-a-lifetime celebration at the Fanny Bridge Ribbon Cutting and Block Party on May 17. Placer County, the Tahoe City Downtown Association and the North Tahoe Community Alliance will recognize one of Tahoe City’s most cherished landmarks this spring after its official reopening Feb. 10.

Placer County partnered with the Federal Highway Administration Central Federal Lands Division, Caltrans, Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and Tahoe Transportation District to plan and construct the $10.6 million replacement bridge over the past decade. The new single-span structure reflects the look of the historic bridge while removing piers from the Truckee River, preserving its character and improving safety, accessibility and environmental conditions.

Now, the bridge will close once more, but this time for a community celebration.

The event will take place Sunday, May 17, beginning at noon in Tahoe City. Showcasing the new bridge, the event will highlight its iconic history and demonstrate its role as a gathering space for special occasions. Attendees will also receive commemorative giveaways, including Placer County 175th anniversary items, and the first 500 attendees will receive a commemorative fanny pack.

Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony and a group photo opportunity on the bridge, attendees will enjoy a free community block party from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Live music and performances throughout the afternoon will feature The Blues Monsters, the North Tahoe High School jazz band and Tahoe Dance School.

Attendees can also enjoy family-friendly activities, booths from regional agencies and nonprofits and a special 360-video booth from Placer County. All videos collected during the block party will be included in the county’s time capsule, which is set to be buried in the fall to commemorate the 175th anniversary.

Food and drinks will be available for purchase from local favorites Bridgetender and River Grill. A free bike valet will be provided by the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition for those who choose to ride to the event.

As an added bonus, attendees can receive half-price admission to Gatekeeper’s Museum during the event.
