AUBURN, CA (MPG) -
In the winter of 1843–44, John Frémont drove his Second Expedition through 100 brutal Sierra miles from Bridgeport to Strawberry, California. Our modern History Expeditions team – comprised of local endurance athletes – has researched the lost route. For five days beginning Sept. 9th , the team will retrace the steps of this Expedition using first account diaries, maps and sketches, supplemented by current maps, GPS and hard-earned mountain experience.

In the 1800’s expedition, men, animals and supplies were pushed to the edge as they fought deep snow, bitter wind and unforgiving elevation in one of the harshest crossings of the entire journey. The History Expeditions team tested Frémont’s legend against the realities of snowpack, altitude and human endurance. Step by step, they’re asking how much of his famous narrative the land itself is willing to confirm.

This will be an outdoor event with picnic table seating; all are welcome to bring their own chairs. Photo courtesy of Auburn State Theatre

Join the intrepid History Expeditions team for a post‑expedition presentation as they share stories and video of their newest adventure. See what they discovered - where the Pathfinder’s story holds, where it fractures, and what it feels like to shoulder his route in the present day.
